The display is bright! Worked as expected using the libraries from Adafruit mention in other reviews. Also must use the SPI_MODE3 setting in the Init. I used the Arduino Nano, VCC to 5V and BKL to 3.3V. (PN: SFTM130JY-7181AN)

—— Richard Ingram

As always 100 % best service....

—— Evto-WEb Aps. Denmark

I have this set up as a monitor for a security system. It works great after I did some troubleshooting.

—— Michael Helms

It is a straight up HDMI monitor with Micro-USB for power and touch controls. It's one fancy trick is that it is a 5 point (capacitive) touch monitor so it works just like a phone or a laptop screen with taps, drags, pinches and other touch gestures. When in extended mode both switched to their native resolutions and the display was nice and sharp.

—— Darkwynd

Hello Janco, Hope you are well. We were very happy with the quality of the previous batch of 2.42 inch OLED displays that we brought from you (see below). We would like to place another order for XXXX pcs.

—— Libby

Excellent work! Thank you I will keep your company in contact for next orders。

Overall a great monitor. I’m a road warrior and was looking a portable monitor that I could take with me to make my work more efficient. Overall impressed with the product. Screen looks good, is responsive, and colors/sharpness are good.

—— J Rau

Awesome little monitor for my projects.

—— Daniel Champagne

I got the samples within a week. Very fast delivery. This is a very nice display. Very sharp with good contrast. The viewing angles are a little better than some of the other displays I have used.

—— GeorgeB

Displays came well packaged with foam to protect the header pins against being bent in shipment. Came right up at the default 0x3C I2C address used by MicroPython's SSD1306 driver. Pre-soldered header is a time saver. Enough room for four lines by sixteen characters of tiny text. These are my new favorite displays. (0.91 OLED)

—— Detta

Easy enough to get set up, and good colors. Pure black is perfect, as expected from an OLED. Only issue I have is per-pixel writing - it takes about 1.5 seconds for a full refresh with my setup.

—— Ryan James

Great screens - were packed well and worked great!

—— Fletcher

This is not the first time we have ordered. At first, we ordered a trial batch of 10 pcs, then two times of 1000 pcs, and now 3000 pcs.

—— Josh

I am working on the Reflections open-source mobile entertainment system and needed a bright display for a wrist-watch application. SAEF gave me great communication, answered my questions quickly, and sent me the parts quickly. -Frank

Why Does an 8 Inch TFT LCD with MIPI DSI Require a Different Signal Integrity and Power Sequencing Strategy?
Latest company news about Why Does an 8 Inch TFT LCD with MIPI DSI Require a Different Signal Integrity and Power Sequencing Strategy?

A common scene in an engineering review: the block diagram shows an 8 inch TFT LCD with an 800 × 1280 IPS panel, MIPI DSI interface, and a capacitive touch panel bonded with OCA. The processor has a MIPI DSI controller, the power tree looks reasonable, and the schedule has two weeks for bring-up. Three weeks later, the display initializes intermittently, the touch controller misses interrupts after a warm reboot, and the first EMC scan shows broadband noise from the FPC.

These are not exotic failures. They are the predictable result of treating an 8 inch TFT LCD as a simple peripheral rather than a high-speed subsystem. The SFTO800B-7359A-CT from Saef Technology Limited is a good case study: 800 × 1280 resolution, ILI9881C driver, 4-lane MIPI DSI, integrated GT927 capacitive touch, and a 24-LED backlight with a 24 V typical forward voltage. The datasheet gives the numbers needed to avoid the common traps—if the integration work is organized around them.

First trap: assuming MIPI DSI is just a faster SPI

The 8 inch TFT LCD uses four MIPI DSI data lanes plus a clock lane. Each differential pair is a transmission line. The datasheet specifies the DSI timing and the high-speed mode transitions, but it cannot specify your PCB stack-up. That part is the integrator’s responsibility.

For reliable operation, route each MIPI pair as a 100 Ω differential line, match intra-pair lengths to within a few mils, and keep the pairs away from switching regulators and the backlight boost inductor. A continuous ground reference plane under the DSI traces is not optional; splits in the return path turn the FPC into an antenna. The datasheet also shows the power sequence requiring MIPI to be in LP-11 before commands are sent. If the host starts high-speed transmission before the panel is ready, initialization can fail silently or intermittently.

The practical fix is to treat the 8 inch TFT LCD interface as a high-speed bus from the first schematic review. Add series AC coupling capacitors if required by the PHY, place ESD protection close to the connector, and verify the differential impedance with a TDR coupon before the first assembly run. This is cheaper than a respin.

Second trap: power sequencing is not a suggestion

The SFTO800B-7359A-CT datasheet includes a power-on and power-off sequence with VDD, IOVCC, AVDD, AVEE, VGH, and VGL. The exact timing matters because the ILI9881C latches OTP settings during reset and expects the MIPI lanes to be in the correct low-power state. A common mistake is to release the hardware reset too early or to send the Sleep Out command before the 120 ms reset completion window has elapsed.

On an 8 inch TFT LCD, the backlight adds a second power domain. The LED string is 8 series × 3 parallel, with a typical forward voltage of 24 V at 60 mA. Use a constant-current boost driver with an enable pin that is sequenced after the logic rails and after the display has been initialized. Do not tie the backlight enable directly to the main 3.3 V rail. If the backlight is on while the panel is still in reset, the display can show a white flash, and in repeated power-cycle testing this accelerates image sticking.

A practical sequencing rule for the 8 inch TFT LCD is: logic rails first, then panel bias, then release reset, wait for the specified reset completion time, send initialization commands, and only then enable the backlight. On power-down, reverse the order: backlight off, display off, panel bias off, logic off. This avoids residual charge on the panel and protects the driver IC.

Third trap: the touch panel is part of the optical and electrical stack

The SFTO800B-7359A-CT integrates a G+F+F capacitive touch panel with a GT927 controller over I2C. The datasheet lists ≥85% light transmission, ≥6H surface hardness, and OCA bonding. Those numbers are good starting points, but they do not answer the system-level questions: Does the touch controller wake reliably from suspend? Does the cover glass thickness change the touch sensitivity? Does the OCA bond survive thermal cycling without delamination?

For industrial products in Germany and the United States, the touch stack often needs to be customized. Saef Technology Limited offers configurable cover glass thickness, industrial touch ICs with extended temperature range, ±15 kV ESD protection, and rain-rejection algorithms for outdoor enclosures. If the product will be used with gloves or in wet conditions, specify that during the RFQ, not after the first prototype. A standard 8 inch TFT LCD with a consumer-grade touch controller may pass bench tests and fail in the field.

Optically, OCA bonding is the right default for an 8 inch TFT LCD because it reduces internal reflections and improves sunlight readability. The datasheet’s 500 cd/m² typical luminance is adequate for many indoor HMI applications, but if the product will be mounted near a window or outdoors, consider an anti-glare cover glass and verify the contrast ratio after bonding. The panel’s 800:1 contrast ratio is measured on the bare cell; the final stack will be lower.

Fourth trap: EMC and ESD are system properties, not component properties

The datasheet lists ESD testing at ±4 kV contact and ±8 kV air for the module, plus vibration and shock tests. Those tests are performed on the display assembly, not on the final product. Once the 8 inch TFT LCD is mounted in a plastic enclosure with a floating FPC and a cover glass, the discharge path changes.

For an industrial HMI, plan for ESD testing at the front surface and at the connector. Add a ground ring around the cover glass if the enclosure is plastic. Keep the MIPI pairs short and referenced to a solid ground plane. If the product must meet EN 55032/24, consider a shielded FPC or a ferrite bead on the backlight power line, but validate the effect on the boost converter stability. The datasheet’s initialization code is useful, but it will not compensate for a noisy power rail.

Verification checklist before tooling release

Before committing to production tooling for an 8 inch TFT LCD, run these checks:

  • Measure MIPI differential impedance on a test coupon; confirm 100 Ω ± 10%.

  • Verify power sequencing with an oscilloscope: reset release, Sleep Out delay, and backlight enable order.

  • Test cold start at −20°C and warm start at 70°C; confirm the display initializes and the touch controller responds.

  • Run a 24-hour image-sticking test with a checkerboard pattern, then verify the residual image disappears within the specified time.

  • Perform a pre-compliance EMC scan with the final enclosure and FPC routing.

  • Confirm the touch stack with gloved and wet-finger tests if the application requires it.

These steps are not glamorous, but they separate a prototype that works on a bench from an 8 inch TFT LCD design that survives a factory floor, a vehicle cabin, or an outdoor kiosk.

The takeaway

An 8 inch TFT LCD with MIPI DSI and capacitive touch is a capable platform for high-resolution industrial HMI. The SFTO800B-7359A-CT provides the resolution, interface, and optical performance needed for those applications. The engineering effort belongs in the signal integrity, power sequencing, touch-stack definition, and EMC planning—not in debugging a display that was expected to be plug-and-play.

The full pin definitions, power sequence diagrams, DSI timing tables, and initialization code are in the SFTO800B-7359A-CT Datasheet 8-inch 8001280 MIPI TFT LCD with CTP.pdf.
