The display is bright! Worked as expected using the libraries from Adafruit mention in other reviews. Also must use the SPI_MODE3 setting in the Init. I used the Arduino Nano, VCC to 5V and BKL to 3.3V. (PN: SFTM130JY-7181AN)

—— Richard Ingram

As always 100 % best service....

—— Evto-WEb Aps. Denmark

I have this set up as a monitor for a security system. It works great after I did some troubleshooting.

—— Michael Helms

It is a straight up HDMI monitor with Micro-USB for power and touch controls. It's one fancy trick is that it is a 5 point (capacitive) touch monitor so it works just like a phone or a laptop screen with taps, drags, pinches and other touch gestures. When in extended mode both switched to their native resolutions and the display was nice and sharp.

—— Darkwynd

Hello Janco, Hope you are well. We were very happy with the quality of the previous batch of 2.42 inch OLED displays that we brought from you (see below). We would like to place another order for XXXX pcs.

—— Libby

Excellent work! Thank you I will keep your company in contact for next orders。

Overall a great monitor. I’m a road warrior and was looking a portable monitor that I could take with me to make my work more efficient. Overall impressed with the product. Screen looks good, is responsive, and colors/sharpness are good.

—— J Rau

Awesome little monitor for my projects.

—— Daniel Champagne

I got the samples within a week. Very fast delivery. This is a very nice display. Very sharp with good contrast. The viewing angles are a little better than some of the other displays I have used.

—— GeorgeB

Displays came well packaged with foam to protect the header pins against being bent in shipment. Came right up at the default 0x3C I2C address used by MicroPython's SSD1306 driver. Pre-soldered header is a time saver. Enough room for four lines by sixteen characters of tiny text. These are my new favorite displays. (0.91 OLED)

—— Detta

Easy enough to get set up, and good colors. Pure black is perfect, as expected from an OLED. Only issue I have is per-pixel writing - it takes about 1.5 seconds for a full refresh with my setup.

—— Ryan James

Great screens - were packed well and worked great!

—— Fletcher

This is not the first time we have ordered. At first, we ordered a trial batch of 10 pcs, then two times of 1000 pcs, and now 3000 pcs.

—— Josh

I am working on the Reflections open-source mobile entertainment system and needed a bright display for a wrist-watch application. SAEF gave me great communication, answered my questions quickly, and sent me the parts quickly. -Frank

Seven Interface Modes, Which One Should Your 3.5-Inch 320x480 TFT LCD Design Use?
Latest company news about Seven Interface Modes, Which One Should Your 3.5-Inch 320x480 TFT LCD Design Use?

Most display datasheets describe one interface, or maybe two. The SF-TC350H-8677A2-N from Saef Technology Limited is different. The ST7796S controller inside this 3.5-inch 320x480 TFT LCD supports at least seven interface configurations: MIPI-DBI Type B 24-bit, 18-bit, 16-bit, 9-bit, and 8-bit buses, plus 3-line SPI, 4-line SPI, and MIPI-DSI. That flexibility is useful during prototyping, but it creates a real design question: which mode should the production board use, and why?

This article is organized as a selection guide for the seven interface modes, followed by the backlight and touch integration decisions that are often treated as afterthoughts. The full pin definitions, timing diagrams, and interface mode table are in the SF-TC350H-8677A2-N Datasheet 3.5 inch TFT LCD.pdf. Place this link in the interface-selection section of the product page, with the anchor text above..

The starting point: why seven modes exist

The ST7796S is a flexible controller designed for multiple host platforms. The IM0, IM1, and IM2 pins set the interface mode at power-up, and the datasheet's mode table is the reference. A 3.5-inch TFT LCD display with this controller can be connected to a small MCU over SPI, to a mid-range MCU over an 8-bit or 16-bit parallel bus, or to an application processor over MIPI-DSI. The same physical module supports all of them.

That flexibility is valuable for a supplier because one module can serve multiple customers. For the integrator, it means the interface decision is a design choice, not a fixed constraint. The choice should be made before the carrier board is drawn, because the pin mapping, the connector, and the firmware driver all depend on it.

Mode 1 and 2: the MIPI-DBI Type B buses (24-bit and 18-bit)

The 24-bit and 18-bit MIPI-DBI Type B modes use the widest parallel bus on the connector. The 24-bit mode maps DB0–DB23 to the red, green, and blue data channels, and the 18-bit mode uses the upper bits. These modes are intended for hosts with a dedicated LCD controller and enough GPIO to route the full bus.

For a 3.5-inch 320x480 TFT LCD at 60 Hz, the data rate is modest. A 24-bit frame is 320 × 480 × 3 bytes = 460,800 bytes. The datasheet's DCLK range supports the required pixel clock, and the parallel bus can sustain it without compression. The trade-off is pin count: 24 data lines plus HSYNC, VSYNC, DCLK, and DE. That is a lot of I/O for a small MCU.

The 18-bit mode is a practical compromise. It reduces the bus to 18 data lines and still provides 262K colors, which is enough for most industrial UI. The datasheet's display color is 16.7M (8-bit per channel), but the 18-bit mode uses 6-bit per channel with dithering. If the UI uses flat colors and text, the difference is minor. If the UI uses photographs or gradients, the 24-bit mode is better.

Mode 3 and 4: the 16-bit and 9-bit MIPI-DBI buses

The 16-bit mode is the most common choice for a 3.5-inch 320x480 TFT LCD on a mid-range MCU. It maps 5 bits to red, 6 bits to green, and 5 bits to blue, which is the classic RGB565 format. The bus is 16 data lines, and the firmware can pack each pixel into two bytes. The memory footprint of a frame buffer is 320 × 480 × 2 bytes = 307,200 bytes, which fits comfortably in the internal SRAM of many Cortex-M4 and Cortex-M7 MCUs.

The 9-bit mode is unusual. It uses 9 data lines and is intended for hosts that support a 9-bit DBI protocol. It is not a common choice for new designs, but it can be useful if the host has a 9-bit interface and no other option. For most 3.5-inch TFT LCD display projects, the 16-bit mode is the better default.

Mode 5: the 8-bit MIPI-DBI bus

The 8-bit mode uses DB0–DB7 and sends each pixel in two or three transfers, depending on the color depth. It is slower than the 16-bit mode, but it frees eight I/O pins. On a 3.5-inch 320x480 TFT LCD, the 8-bit mode is workable for static or slowly updating UI, but it is not the best choice for animation or video. The datasheet's AC timing shows the write cycle time, and the firmware must manage the byte ordering carefully.

A common mistake is to choose the 8-bit mode for pin savings and then discover that the UI refresh is too slow. On a 3.5-inch TFT LCD display, the full-frame update at 8-bit may take several times longer than at 16-bit. If the product needs a responsive touch interface, the 16-bit mode is usually the better trade-off.

Mode 6 and 7: 3-line SPI and 4-line SPI

The SPI modes are the lowest pin-count options. The 3-line SPI uses CS, SCL, and SDA (plus reset), and the 4-line SPI adds a DC line. The datasheet's SPI timing shows the serial clock cycle and the data setup/hold times. For a 3.5-inch 320x480 TFT LCD, SPI is suitable for static displays, status panels, and applications where the host has limited I/O.

The limitation is bandwidth. A full-frame update over SPI at the datasheet's clock rate is slow relative to the parallel bus, and the display's internal frame memory is not large enough to buffer a full frame at 16.7M colors. The SPI mode is best for partial updates, text, and icons. If the UI needs full-screen animation, the parallel or MIPI-DSI mode is the better choice.

The MIPI-DSI option

The datasheet's mode table includes MIPI-DSI as a separate configuration. This is the highest-bandwidth option and the best fit for an application processor with a MIPI-DSI output. On a 3.5-inch 320x480 TFT LCD, MIPI-DSI provides a clean, high-speed link with fewer pins than the parallel bus. The trade-off is complexity: the host must support MIPI-DSI, and the PCB layout must treat the differential pairs as high-speed lines.

For an industrial product with an applications processor, MIPI-DSI is often the right choice. For a product with a small MCU, the parallel or SPI mode is more practical. The decision should be made at the architecture review, not after the carrier board is designed.

The backlight: 9.2 V at 20 mA is not a 3.3 V load

The backlight is a white-LED string with a typical forward voltage of 9.2 V at 20 mA. The datasheet's luminance is 300 cd/m² typical, and the uniformity is 80% minimum. On a 3.5-inch 320x480 TFT LCD, the backlight driver should be a constant-current boost converter, not a fixed-voltage supply. The LED string voltage is high enough that a 3.3 V rail cannot drive it directly, and a resistor in series with the LED would waste power and produce inconsistent brightness.

The backlight driver should support PWM dimming and should be rated for the cold-start voltage rise. The datasheet's LED lifetime is defined at 20 mA per LED, and the note warns that higher current will shorten the lifetime. On a 3.5-inch TFT LCD display in a sealed enclosure, the backlight heat is modest but not zero. Provide a thermal path from the LED bar to the enclosure if the product runs at full brightness for long periods.

Touch: the pins are there, but the stack is not

The SF-TC350H-8677A2-N includes touch panel pins (XR, YU, XL, YD) for a 4-wire resistive touch panel. The datasheet's block diagram shows the touch interface as a separate block. This is a useful option for industrial products that need gloved operation or a low-cost touch solution.

For a 3.5-inch 320x480 TFT LCD with a resistive touch panel, the integration is straightforward: the four touch pins connect to the host's ADC or touch controller, and the firmware reads the touch position. The optical stack is an air gap, which reduces contrast slightly, but the touch works with any stylus and is immune to water droplets.

If the product needs multi-touch or a more modern front surface, Saef Technology Limited can provide a custom capacitive touch panel with OCA bonding. The touch stack should be defined before the bezel drawing is released, because the cover glass thickness and the bonding method affect the overall thickness and the front surface hardness.

A selection matrix for the 3.5-inch 320x480 TFT LCD

Interface mode Pin count Best for Avoid if
24-bit DBI Type B High Full-color UI, photo display Host has limited I/O
18-bit DBI Type B Medium General industrial UI UI needs 16.7M colors
16-bit DBI Type B Medium Mid-range MCU, RGB565 Host has no parallel bus
9-bit DBI Low Legacy hosts New design with other options
8-bit DBI Low Static UI, pin-limited host UI needs fast refresh
3/4-line SPI Very low Status panel, slow UI Full-frame animation
MIPI-DSI Low Applications processor Host has no DSI output

Verification checklist before the design review

  • Interface mode is fixed and the IM0/IM1/IM2 straps match the selected mode.

  • Host has the required pin count and the firmware driver supports the mode.

  • Backlight driver is constant-current and rated for 9.2 V at 20 mA.

  • PWM dimming frequency is compatible with the application.

  • Touch panel stack (resistive or capacitive) is defined before the bezel is frozen.

  • Power sequence follows the datasheet: VDD first, then signal lines, then backlight.

  • Frame buffer size matches the selected color depth and resolution.

A 3.5-inch TFT LCD display with seven interface modes is flexible, but flexibility is not a substitute for a decision. Choose the mode that matches the host, the UI, and the production volume, and document the choice in the design file. The SF-TC350H-8677A2-N provides the display and the controller options; the integration work belongs in the interface selection, the backlight driver, and the touch stack.

For a design review, contact the engineering team at Saef Technology Limited with the host interface, the UI requirements, and the touch plan. The team can confirm the mode selection and discuss the custom touch options if the enclosure allows.
