The display is bright! Worked as expected using the libraries from Adafruit mention in other reviews. Also must use the SPI_MODE3 setting in the Init. I used the Arduino Nano, VCC to 5V and BKL to 3.3V. (PN: SFTM130JY-7181AN)

—— Richard Ingram

As always 100 % best service....

—— Evto-WEb Aps. Denmark

I have this set up as a monitor for a security system. It works great after I did some troubleshooting.

—— Michael Helms

It is a straight up HDMI monitor with Micro-USB for power and touch controls. It's one fancy trick is that it is a 5 point (capacitive) touch monitor so it works just like a phone or a laptop screen with taps, drags, pinches and other touch gestures. When in extended mode both switched to their native resolutions and the display was nice and sharp.

—— Darkwynd

Hello Janco, Hope you are well. We were very happy with the quality of the previous batch of 2.42 inch OLED displays that we brought from you (see below). We would like to place another order for XXXX pcs.

Overall a great monitor. I’m a road warrior and was looking a portable monitor that I could take with me to make my work more efficient. Overall impressed with the product. Screen looks good, is responsive, and colors/sharpness are good.

—— J Rau

Awesome little monitor for my projects.

—— Daniel Champagne

I got the samples within a week. Very fast delivery. This is a very nice display. Very sharp with good contrast. The viewing angles are a little better than some of the other displays I have used.

—— GeorgeB

Displays came well packaged with foam to protect the header pins against being bent in shipment. Came right up at the default 0x3C I2C address used by MicroPython's SSD1306 driver. Pre-soldered header is a time saver. Enough room for four lines by sixteen characters of tiny text. These are my new favorite displays. (0.91 OLED)

—— Detta

Easy enough to get set up, and good colors. Pure black is perfect, as expected from an OLED. Only issue I have is per-pixel writing - it takes about 1.5 seconds for a full refresh with my setup.

—— Ryan James

Great screens - were packed well and worked great!

—— Fletcher

This is not the first time we have ordered. At first, we ordered a trial batch of 10 pcs, then two times of 1000 pcs, and now 3000 pcs.

—— Josh

I am working on the Reflections open-source mobile entertainment system and needed a bright display for a wrist-watch application. SAEF gave me great communication, answered my questions quickly, and sent me the parts quickly. -Frank

Is Your 10.4 Inch TFT LCD Design Ready for 24/7 Industrial Duty?
Latest company news about Is Your 10.4 Inch TFT LCD Design Ready for 24/7 Industrial Duty?

A 10.4 inch TFT LCD often lands in the middle of an industrial BOM review for a simple reason: it is large enough for a machine operator to read at arm’s length, but small enough to fit a panel-mount enclosure. The SFTO1040YX-7241AN from Saef Technology Limited is a typical example—1024 × 768 IPS panel, LVDS interface, 800 cd/m² backlight, and a 40-LED string arranged as 10 series × 4 parallel. The datasheet looks straightforward until the first prototype is powered up in a 70°C cabinet or a cold warehouse, and the backlight driver starts to misbehave.

This article is not a general “how to connect an LCD” guide. It is a focused look at the integration details that separate a 10.4 inch TFT LCD that survives years of industrial duty from one that becomes a field-return statistic.

The backlight is a 30.8 V system, not a 12 V accessory

The first mistake with a 10.4 inch TFT LCD is treating the backlight as a simple 12 V load. The datasheet specifies a typical LED string voltage of 30.8 V at 120 mA total, with a 12 V input on the LED_VCCS pins and a separate enable (LED_EN) and PWM dimming input. That means the backlight driver is a boost converter, and it needs to be selected for the actual load—not for a generic “LED driver” label.

For an industrial 10.4 inch TFT LCD, the driver should be constant-current, not constant-voltage. The 10-series × 4-parallel arrangement means the forward voltage varies with temperature and process, and a constant-voltage supply will cause current hogging between the parallel strings. The result is uneven brightness and accelerated aging of the hottest string. A constant-current boost with open-LED and short-circuit protection is the baseline. The datasheet’s 120 mA total current and 30.6 V typical forward voltage give you the design point, but leave margin for the 30.8 V maximum and for cold-start voltage rise.

The second backlight issue is PWM dimming frequency. The datasheet shows LED_PWM as an input, but it does not choose the frequency for you. In an industrial HMI, low-frequency PWM can produce visible flicker on camera-based inspection systems or cause beat frequencies with machine vision lighting. A dimming frequency above 1 kHz is a safer starting point, and the driver should maintain current regulation across the dimming range. If the product will be used in a dark control room, test the lowest dimming level for audible noise from the boost inductor—this is a common complaint that does not show up in a datasheet.

LVDS is a differential interface, so treat it like one

The 10.4 inch TFT LCD uses LVDS with four data channels plus clock. The datasheet provides the connector pinout (JAE FI-XB30SSLA-HF15) and the SEL6/8 pin to select 6-bit or 8-bit mode. It also gives the differential thresholds and the clock frequency range. What it cannot give you is the PCB layout discipline required to make LVDS reliable in an industrial enclosure.

For a 10.4 inch TFT LCD at 65 MHz clock, the LVDS pairs should be routed as 100 Ω differential lines, with intra-pair skew kept small and the pairs referenced to a continuous ground plane. The connector is a fine-pitch JAE type, and the FPC or cable assembly should be specified for the impedance and shielding required by the enclosure. A common failure mode in industrial panel PCs is a long, unshielded LVDS cable that passes near a motor drive or a switching power supply. The display works on the bench and shows occasional pixel noise in the field. The fix is usually a shielded cable with a grounded backshell, plus ferrite beads on the clock pair if needed—not a change to the display itself.

The SEL6/8 pin is another detail that deserves attention. If the host is configured for 8-bit LVDS and the display is set to 6-bit, the color mapping will be wrong and the image may appear with incorrect gamma. Verify the strap on the connector before production, and document it in the assembly drawing. On a 10.4 inch TFT LCD, a color-mapping error is easy to spot on a grayscale ramp but easy to miss on a photographic UI.

Power sequencing is a reliability requirement, not a formality

The datasheet includes a power-on/off sequence with timing parameters for VDD, LVDS signals, and backlight. The sequence matters because the display’s internal charge pumps and the LVDS receiver need to be stable before valid data arrives. A common integration error is to enable the backlight before the LVDS clock is stable, which can produce a white flash and, over repeated cycles, contribute to image sticking.

For a 10.4 inch TFT LCD in an industrial product, the sequence should be controlled by the host firmware or a power-management IC, not by a simple RC delay. VDD (3.3 V) first, then LVDS clock and data, then backlight enable after the panel is initialized. On power-down, reverse the order. The datasheet’s timing table gives the minimum delays; use them as a starting point and verify with an oscilloscope across the full operating temperature range. Cold start is where marginal sequencing usually fails.

The touch option changes the mechanical and optical stack

The SFTO1040YX-7241AN is a display-only module, but many industrial HMIs now expect touch. Adding a capacitive touch panel to a 10.4 inch TFT LCD is not a matter of bonding a sensor to the front and hoping for the best. The cover glass thickness, the OCA bonding process, and the touch controller’s EMC immunity all affect the final product.

For factory automation or outdoor kiosks, an OCA-bonded PCAP with an anti-glare cover glass is usually the right starting point. The display’s 800 cd/m² luminance and 700:1 contrast ratio are measured on the bare panel; the final stack will be lower. If the product will be used with gloves or in wet conditions, specify the touch controller accordingly—consumer-grade controllers may not meet the required ESD or rain-rejection performance. Saef Technology Limited offers standard and custom touch solutions for this 10.4 inch TFT LCD, including cover glass thickness, surface treatment, and controller selection. The earlier the touch stack is defined, the fewer mechanical surprises at tooling release.

What to verify before the design review

Before signing off on a 10.4 inch TFT LCD design, run these checks:

  • Confirm the backlight driver is constant-current and rated for the 30.8 V string at 120 mA, with margin for cold start.

  • Measure PWM dimming frequency and check for flicker or audible noise at low brightness.

  • Verify LVDS differential impedance and intra-pair skew on a test coupon.

  • Confirm SEL6/8 strap matches the host’s LVDS mode.

  • Capture the power-up sequence at −20°C and +70°C; confirm LVDS is stable before backlight enable.

  • Test the touch stack with gloved and wet-finger input if the application requires it.

  • Review the enclosure’s thermal path around the backlight edge; the LED string is the heat source.

These checks are not exotic. They are the difference between a 10.4 inch TFT LCD that works in a lab and one that works in a machine shop, a cold storage facility, or a vehicle cabin.

A practical conclusion

The 10.4 inch TFT LCD is a mature, capable display format for industrial HMI. The SFTO1040YX-7241AN provides the resolution, LVDS interface, and brightness needed for many panel-mount and machine-control applications. The engineering effort belongs in the backlight driver, the LVDS layout, and the power sequencing—not in discovering after the first build that the display was treated as a plug-and-play component.
