Customer Reviews
Very fast response to email and after payment validated item got shipped with express air freight and received within few days. Items were brand new in condition and even had pin header soldered which is a big plus. Very happy overall and will buy again!

—— Andreas Anderssons

The display is bright! Worked as expected using the libraries from Adafruit mention in other reviews. Also must use the SPI_MODE3 setting in the Init. I used the Arduino Nano, VCC to 5V and BKL to 3.3V. (PN: SFTM130JY-7181AN)

—— Richard Ingram

As always 100 % best service....

—— Evto-WEb Aps. Denmark

I have this set up as a monitor for a security system. It works great after I did some troubleshooting.

—— Michael Helms

It is a straight up HDMI monitor with Micro-USB for power and touch controls. It's one fancy trick is that it is a 5 point (capacitive) touch monitor so it works just like a phone or a laptop screen with taps, drags, pinches and other touch gestures. When in extended mode both switched to their native resolutions and the display was nice and sharp.

—— Darkwynd

Hello Janco, Hope you are well. We were very happy with the quality of the previous batch of 2.42 inch OLED displays that we brought from you (see below). We would like to place another order for XXXX pcs.

Overall a great monitor. I’m a road warrior and was looking a portable monitor that I could take with me to make my work more efficient. Overall impressed with the product. Screen looks good, is responsive, and colors/sharpness are good.

—— J Rau

Awesome little monitor for my projects.

—— Daniel Champagne

I got the samples within a week. Very fast delivery. This is a very nice display. Very sharp with good contrast. The viewing angles are a little better than some of the other displays I have used.

—— GeorgeB

Displays came well packaged with foam to protect the header pins against being bent in shipment. Came right up at the default 0x3C I2C address used by MicroPython's SSD1306 driver. Pre-soldered header is a time saver. Enough room for four lines by sixteen characters of tiny text. These are my new favorite displays. (0.91 OLED)

—— Detta

Easy enough to get set up, and good colors. Pure black is perfect, as expected from an OLED. Only issue I have is per-pixel writing - it takes about 1.5 seconds for a full refresh with my setup.

—— Ryan James

Great screens - were packed well and worked great!

—— Fletcher

This is not the first time we have ordered. At first, we ordered a trial batch of 10 pcs, then two times of 1000 pcs, and now 3000 pcs.

—— Josh

I am working on the Reflections open-source mobile entertainment system and needed a bright display for a wrist-watch application. SAEF gave me great communication, answered my questions quickly, and sent me the parts quickly. -Frank

Is Your 0.42-Inch OLED Design Ready for Production, or Only Passing Bench Tests?
Latest company news about Is Your 0.42-Inch OLED Design Ready for Production, or Only Passing Bench Tests?

Small OLEDs have a way of looking finished on a bench. The image is crisp, the contrast is high, and the module is small enough to hold between two fingers. Then the pilot run starts, and the same 0.42-inch OLED display shows a faint residual current in sleep mode, a display that fails to wake after a battery swap, or a few units with uneven brightness after a week of continuous operation. None of these failures are random. They usually trace back to five design decisions that were made too late or reviewed too lightly.

The SFOS042XZ-7110AN from Saef Technology Limited is a useful case for that review. It is a 72 × 40 monochrome PMOLED with an SSD1315 driver, I2C and 4-wire SPI interfaces, an internal charge pump option, and a specified power-up and power-down sequence. The datasheet is compact, but it contains the details that separate a 0.42-inch OLED display that survives a pilot run from one that becomes a rework item. This article is organized as a failure timeline rather than a feature tour: five moments when a small OLED design usually goes wrong, and what to check before each one.

Failure point 1: The power sequence is treated as a suggestion

The datasheet gives a specific order: power up VDD, send Display Off, initialize, clear the screen, power up VCC or VBAT, wait 100 ms after VCC is stable, then send Display On. The power-down order is the reverse: Display Off, power down VCC/VBAT, wait 100 ms for the panel to discharge, then power down VDD. There is also a note that VDD should not be powered down before VCC/VBAT, and that VCC/VBAT should be kept floating when off.

On a 0.42-inch OLED display, these delays feel long relative to the size of the module, and it is tempting to shorten them. The problem is that the SSD1315 has an ESD protection circuit between VDD and VCC. If VDD is on and VCC is off, VCC can be pulled below VDD through that path. If VDD is powered down first, the panel may not discharge cleanly, and the next power-up can start from an undefined state. The 100 ms delay is not a formality; it is the time the panel needs to complete charge and discharge.

The full power sequence, pin definitions, and charge-pump configuration are in the SFOS042XZ-7110AN 0.42-inch OLED display datasheet. Place this link in the power-sequence section of the product page, with the anchor text above. Engineers evaluating a 0.42-inch OLED display for a battery-powered product should read the sequence before the schematic is finalized, not after the first wake-up failure.

Failure point 2: The leakage path is left in the schematic

The datasheet contains a warning that is easy to miss: when the internal charge pump is used, the main board design must add an electronic switch, otherwise leakage current can occur. The recommended application circuit shows a P-channel MOSFET and an N-channel MOSFET around the VBAT input, with 47 kΩ resistors and decoupling capacitors. This is not an optional refinement. It is the difference between a 0.42-inch OLED display that meets its sleep-current target and one that drains a small battery even when the display is off.

The reason is straightforward. The internal charge pump needs VBAT, and VBAT may remain connected to the battery even when the display is in sleep mode. Without a switch, leakage can flow through the charge-pump path and the panel bias network. On a product with a coin cell or a small Li-ion cell, that leakage can dominate the standby budget. The datasheet’s recommended components—0.1 µF and 4.7 µF capacitors, 47 kΩ resistors, FDN338P and FDN335N MOSFETs—are a starting point, but the switch should be controlled by a GPIO so that firmware can completely remove VBAT when the display is not needed.

A 0.42-inch OLED display is often chosen for its low power, but low power is a system property. If the switch is omitted, the display’s sleep current can be much higher than the datasheet’s 1 µA typical for VDD and 2 µA typical for VCC. Review the schematic for the switch before the first prototype, and measure the battery current with the display off and the MCU in its lowest power state.

Failure point 3: Brightness is set to the maximum and left there

The datasheet gives a lifetime trade-off that should shape the firmware: 430 cd/m² for 10,000 hours, 360 cd/m² for 30,000 hours, and 300 cd/m² for 50,000 hours. The end-of-life criterion is 50% of initial brightness. For an industrial or medical product, the difference between 430 and 300 cd/m² is not just a brightness preference; it is a lifetime decision.

A 0.42-inch OLED display with 2000:1 dark-room contrast is often bright enough at a lower setting. If the product is used indoors or in a handheld device, 300 cd/m² may be sufficient, and it can roughly quintuple the lifetime compared with the maximum setting. The firmware should expose a brightness setting that is calibrated for the enclosure and the viewing distance, not simply set to the maximum in the initialization code.

There is also an image-sticking consideration. The datasheet notes that a fixed pattern can leave an afterimage, although it is usually recoverable. On a small 0.42-inch OLED display, a status icon or a battery gauge that never moves can become visible over time. Use a screensaver, shift the UI by a pixel periodically, or invert the display at a low duty cycle. The datasheet’s application example includes a display-off command and a clear-screen step; use them in the idle path.

Failure point 4: The interface is chosen without the FPC and the host in mind

The module supports I2C and 4-wire SPI, selected by the BS1 pin. In I2C mode, the DC pin acts as the SA0 address select. In SPI mode, the DC pin distinguishes data from commands. The datasheet’s timing tables give the I2C cycle time and the SPI setup/hold times, but the more important question is mechanical: the FPC is a folding type, and the bend radius and the contact side are part of the drawing.

On a 0.42-inch OLED display, the FPC is often longer than the active area, and the module is mounted in a tight enclosure. If the FPC is bent sharply during assembly, the traces can crack or the driver IC can be stressed. The datasheet’s handling precautions call out the driver IC and the surrounding molded sections; those are not generic warnings. Review the FPC bend radius in the mechanical drawing, and specify a stiffener or a controlled bend if the display is folded into a housing.

The interface choice also affects the host pin count. I2C needs two wires plus reset, while 4-wire SPI needs four plus reset. For a 0.42-inch OLED display in a compact device, I2C is often the better choice because it leaves pins for sensors or a haptic driver. If SPI is used, confirm that the host can meet the 300 ns clock cycle and the data setup/hold times.

Failure point 5: The optical and ESD review is postponed

The OLED driver is exposed on this module, and the datasheet warns that semiconductor characteristics can change when the driver is exposed to light. In a product with a transparent window or a light pipe, the driver can behave like a small solar cell and cause malfunction. The fix is mechanical: shield the driver from ambient light in the final enclosure, and include that shield in the inspection fixture as well.

ESD is the other postponed review. The module has a glass panel and a flexible FPC, and the datasheet’s handling precautions call for grounded tools, grounded operators, and static-safe storage. On a 0.42-inch OLED display, the small size makes it tempting to handle without a wrist strap during assembly. That is exactly when the gate oxide or the driver IC can be damaged. Add an ESD test at the FPC and at the front surface, and verify that the enclosure does not create a discharge path to the panel.

If the product needs user input, a 0.42-inch OLED display is usually too small for a conventional touch panel. For compact devices, tactile buttons or a capacitive slider may be more practical. Saef Technology Limited can evaluate custom touch or front-panel solutions if the mechanical envelope allows, but the display’s primary role is often status and measurement readout. Define the interaction model before the enclosure is drawn; adding touch after the front bezel is fixed is expensive at this size.

A pilot-run checklist for the 0.42-inch OLED display

Before the first production build, verify the following:

  • Power-up and power-down sequence captured at the battery voltage extremes, with the 100 ms delays intact.

  • VBAT switch present and controlled by firmware; battery current measured with the display off.

  • Brightness set for the application, with lifetime and image-sticking considered.

  • FPC bend radius and contact side match the mechanical drawing; no sharp folds.

  • Driver shielded from ambient light in the final enclosure and in the test fixture.

  • ESD protection and grounding verified at the FPC and front surface.

  • Interface (I2C or SPI) timing checked against the datasheet, including the SA0 address if I2C is used.

A 0.42-inch OLED display is small enough that these details can be overlooked until the pilot run. They are also small enough that fixing them early is inexpensive. The SFOS042XZ-7110AN provides the display; the reliability comes from the power switch, the sequence, the brightness policy, and the mechanical review.

For a design review, contact the engineering team at Saef Technology Limited with the schematic, the FPC drawing, and the intended sleep-current target. A short review before the pilot run is cheaper than a rework cycle.
