Very fast response to email and after payment validated item got shipped with express air freight and received within few days. Items were brand new in condition and even had pin header soldered which is a big plus. Very happy overall and will buy again!

—— Andreas Anderssons

The display is bright! Worked as expected using the libraries from Adafruit mention in other reviews. Also must use the SPI_MODE3 setting in the Init. I used the Arduino Nano, VCC to 5V and BKL to 3.3V. (PN: SFTM130JY-7181AN)

—— Richard Ingram

As always 100 % best service....

—— Evto-WEb Aps. Denmark

I have this set up as a monitor for a security system. It works great after I did some troubleshooting.

—— Michael Helms

It is a straight up HDMI monitor with Micro-USB for power and touch controls. It's one fancy trick is that it is a 5 point (capacitive) touch monitor so it works just like a phone or a laptop screen with taps, drags, pinches and other touch gestures. When in extended mode both switched to their native resolutions and the display was nice and sharp.

—— Darkwynd

Hello Janco, Hope you are well. We were very happy with the quality of the previous batch of 2.42 inch OLED displays that we brought from you (see below). We would like to place another order for XXXX pcs.

—— Libby

Overall a great monitor. I’m a road warrior and was looking a portable monitor that I could take with me to make my work more efficient. Overall impressed with the product. Screen looks good, is responsive, and colors/sharpness are good.

—— J Rau

Awesome little monitor for my projects.

—— Daniel Champagne

I got the samples within a week. Very fast delivery. This is a very nice display. Very sharp with good contrast. The viewing angles are a little better than some of the other displays I have used.

—— GeorgeB

Displays came well packaged with foam to protect the header pins against being bent in shipment. Came right up at the default 0x3C I2C address used by MicroPython's SSD1306 driver. Pre-soldered header is a time saver. Enough room for four lines by sixteen characters of tiny text. These are my new favorite displays. (0.91 OLED)

—— Detta

Easy enough to get set up, and good colors. Pure black is perfect, as expected from an OLED. Only issue I have is per-pixel writing - it takes about 1.5 seconds for a full refresh with my setup.

—— Ryan James

Great screens - were packed well and worked great!

—— Fletcher

This is not the first time we have ordered. At first, we ordered a trial batch of 10 pcs, then two times of 1000 pcs, and now 3000 pcs.

—— Josh

I am working on the Reflections open-source mobile entertainment system and needed a bright display for a wrist-watch application. SAEF gave me great communication, answered my questions quickly, and sent me the parts quickly. -Frank

Is a 1.8 Inch Round TFT LCD the Right Fit for Your Next Circular HMI Design?
Latest company news about Is a 1.8 Inch Round TFT LCD the Right Fit for Your Next Circular HMI Design?

Circular interfaces have a way of making a product look finished. A thermostat, a wearable controller, a compact instrument dial—the round form factor removes corners and gives the UI a natural center. But once the industrial design is approved, the engineering team inherits a set of problems that rectangular displays never expose: how to define a safe UI area inside a circular active region, how to keep brightness uniform across a round backlight, how to mount a round glass stack without stressing the panel, and how to choose an interface that fits the host processor without wasting pins or bandwidth.

The SFTO180XC-7217BN from Saef Technology Limited is a useful reference point for that discussion. It is a 1.8 inch round TFT LCD with a 360 × 360 IPS panel, ST77916 driver, 800 cd/m² backlight, and a flexible interface set that includes MIPI, QSPI, 8-bit parallel, SPI, and SPI+RGB. The datasheet is compact, but it contains enough detail to show where a round display design usually goes wrong—and how to avoid it.

The first design decision: define the usable circle, not just the active area

The 1.8 inch round TFT LCD has an active area of 45.68 mm × 45.68 mm, but the outline is 48.08 mm × 49.95 mm. That difference matters. The active area is circular, but the module outline includes the FPC tail and the backlight assembly. If the mechanical team designs the bezel from the outline drawing alone, the visible circle may be off-center or the FPC may interfere with the gasket.

A practical approach is to define three circles in the mechanical drawing: the active area, the visible opening after the cover glass or bezel, and the maximum clearance for the FPC bend. On a 1.8 inch round TFT LCD, the FPC exits at the bottom, so the enclosure needs a relief area below the display. If the product uses a cylindrical housing, the FPC bend radius becomes a reliability issue. The datasheet shows a 0.3 mm pitch, 39-pin connector; the flex tail should not be folded sharply behind the panel without a stiffener.

The UI team also needs a safe area inside the circle. Text set to the full active diameter will be clipped at the edges. A conservative rule is to keep critical text and icons inside a circle that is 85–90% of the active diameter. For a 1.8 inch round TFT LCD, that leaves a readable area of roughly 39–41 mm across. This is enough for a numeric readout, a status ring, or a simple icon set, but not for dense menus. Design the information hierarchy around the circle rather than forcing a rectangular layout into it.

Backlight uniformity is harder on a round panel

The SFTO180XC-7217BN uses a white LED backlight with three LEDs in parallel, a typical forward voltage of 6.4 V, and a forward current of 60 mA. The optical specification lists 800 cd/m² typical luminance and a contrast ratio of 800:1 minimum, 1200:1 typical. Those numbers are respectable for a 1.8 inch round TFT LCD, but they are measured at the center of the active area.

On a round display, the edge of the circle is where uniformity problems show up first. A rectangular backlight can hide slight edge falloff in the corners; a round display has no corners, so the eye follows the circumference. If the LED placement and light guide are not optimized for the circular shape, a faint ring or a bright arc can appear near the edge. This is especially visible on a dark UI background.

The datasheet gives a uniformity specification, but the integration team should still inspect a sample with a full-white image and a 50% gray image. On the 1.8 inch round TFT LCD, check the luminance at the top, bottom, left, and right edges of the active circle, not just the center. If the product will be used in a dark enclosure, even a small bright arc can be distracting. An anti-glare cover glass helps, but it does not fix a backlight uniformity issue.

The backlight driver is straightforward but should not be treated as a resistor. The three LEDs are in parallel, with a typical forward voltage of 6.4 V at 60 mA. Use a constant-current boost or a dedicated LED driver sized for the string. If the product runs from a 3.3 V rail, the boost converter must be selected for the 6.4 V output and the 60 mA load, with margin for cold-start voltage rise. PWM dimming is recommended for brightness control, but keep the dimming frequency above the visible flicker range. For industrial HMI, a dimming frequency of 1 kHz or higher is a safer default.

Interface choice: the round display does not need the fastest bus, but it needs the right one

The 1.8 inch round TFT LCD supports a surprisingly wide range of interfaces: MIPI, QSPI, 8-bit parallel, SPI, and SPI+RGB. That flexibility is useful because circular HMI products often use small MCUs or low-power SoCs, and the interface choice affects pin count, memory architecture, and firmware complexity.

For a simple instrument with a static or slowly updating UI, SPI or QSPI is often the most practical choice. The display has an internal frame buffer, so the host does not need to stream pixels continuously. A QSPI interface gives higher throughput than standard SPI while keeping the pin count low. This is a good match for a 1.8 inch round TFT LCD used as a status display or a compact control panel.

For a product with animated rings, scrolling text, or a more graphical UI, the 8-bit parallel or SPI+RGB interface may be a better fit. The parallel interface offers deterministic timing and higher bandwidth, but it consumes more I/O pins. On a small MCU, those pins may not exist. The SPI+RGB mode is a compromise: it uses the RGB bus for display data but keeps the command interface serial. The datasheet’s pin definitions and timing diagrams are the place to confirm which mode matches the host.

The ST77916 driver includes a TE (tearing effect) output. On a 1.8 inch round TFT LCD, the TE signal is useful for synchronizing UI updates to the display refresh. If the product uses a circular progress ring or a rotating indicator, tearing is more noticeable than on a rectangular display because the eye follows the circle. Connect TE to the host if the MCU supports it, and update the frame during the vertical blanking interval.

The full pin definitions, interface timing, and power sequence are in the SFTO180XC-7217BN 1.8 inch round TFT LCD datasheet. Place this link in the interface section of the product page, with the anchor text above. Engineers evaluating a round display need the timing table before they select the host processor.

Power sequencing and the 800-nit backlight

The datasheet specifies a power-on sequence with VDD, display ON, and backlight ON, and a reverse sequence for power-off. The backlight should not be enabled before the display is initialized. On a 1.8 inch round TFT LCD, a white flash at power-up is more visible than on a rectangular panel because the entire circle lights up at once. This is not just a cosmetic issue; repeated power cycling with the backlight on during initialization can contribute to image sticking.

The backlight is rated at 800 cd/m², which is bright for a 1.8-inch display. In a dark enclosure, full brightness may be too high for comfortable viewing. Implement PWM dimming in firmware and consider an ambient light sensor if the product will be used in both indoor and outdoor environments. The datasheet’s 800 cd/m² is a maximum useful brightness, not a mandatory operating point. Running the backlight at 60–70% in typical indoor conditions reduces heat and extends LED life.

The LED life is specified at 40,000 hours to 50% initial brightness. That number assumes reasonable thermal conditions. In a sealed circular enclosure, the backlight heat has nowhere to go. Provide a thermal path from the LED area to the enclosure or reduce brightness at high ambient temperatures. The operating temperature range is −20°C to +70°C, but the backlight lifetime is sensitive to temperature. A 1.8 inch round TFT LCD in a metal housing will run cooler than the same display in a sealed plastic pod.

Adding touch to a round display: plan the optical stack early

The SFTO180XC-7217BN is available without a touch screen, but the pin definition includes touch interface signals (TP-SCL, TP-SDA, TP-RESET, TP-INT, TP-VCC). That means the platform can support a capacitive touch panel with an I2C controller. For a circular HMI, touch is often desirable, but the mechanical integration is different from a rectangular display.

A round cover glass with a printed black border is common. The border hides the FPC and the backlight edge, but it also reduces the visible active area. If the touch sensor is bonded with OCA, the optical stack becomes thinner and more transparent, but the cover glass thickness and the adhesive index must be matched to avoid haze. For gloved operation or wet environments, specify the touch controller accordingly. A consumer-grade controller may not meet the ESD and rain-rejection requirements of an industrial product.

Saef Technology Limited offers standard and custom touch solutions for the 1.8 inch round TFT LCD, including cover glass thickness, surface treatment, and controller selection. The practical advice is to define the touch stack before the bezel drawing is released. A round display with a poorly matched cover glass can lose contrast and touch sensitivity at the same time.

What to verify before the design review

Before freezing the design of a 1.8 inch round TFT LCD, run these checks:

  • Confirm the active circle, visible opening, and FPC clearance in the mechanical drawing.

  • Inspect backlight uniformity at the top, bottom, left, and right edges of the active area.

  • Verify the interface mode matches the host’s pin count and memory architecture.

  • Capture the power-up sequence and confirm the backlight is enabled after display initialization.

  • Test the touch stack with gloved and wet-finger input if the application requires it.

  • Check the TE signal timing if the UI uses animated rings or scrolling content.

  • Review the enclosure thermal path around the backlight and the FPC bend radius.

These checks are specific to a round display, and they are the ones most likely to be missed when the team is accustomed to rectangular panels.

A practical conclusion

A 1.8 inch round TFT LCD is not simply a rectangular display with the corners cut off. The circular active area changes the UI layout, the backlight uniformity requirements, the mechanical mounting, and the touch integration. The SFTO180XC-7217BN provides a solid hardware foundation: 360 × 360 IPS panel, ST77916 driver, 800 cd/m² backlight, and a flexible interface set. The engineering effort belongs in the circular safe area, the backlight edge uniformity, the interface choice, and the power sequence.

For German and US industrial OEMs, the appeal of a round display is often the product aesthetics. The risk is that the integration details are treated as an afterthought. A short design review before the bezel and FPC are frozen is cheaper than a tooling change.
