The display is bright! Worked as expected using the libraries from Adafruit mention in other reviews. Also must use the SPI_MODE3 setting in the Init. I used the Arduino Nano, VCC to 5V and BKL to 3.3V. (PN: SFTM130JY-7181AN)

—— Richard Ingram

As always 100 % best service....

I have this set up as a monitor for a security system. It works great after I did some troubleshooting.

—— Michael Helms

It is a straight up HDMI monitor with Micro-USB for power and touch controls. It's one fancy trick is that it is a 5 point (capacitive) touch monitor so it works just like a phone or a laptop screen with taps, drags, pinches and other touch gestures. When in extended mode both switched to their native resolutions and the display was nice and sharp.

—— Darkwynd

Hello Janco, Hope you are well. We were very happy with the quality of the previous batch of 2.42 inch OLED displays that we brought from you (see below). We would like to place another order for XXXX pcs.

Overall a great monitor. I’m a road warrior and was looking a portable monitor that I could take with me to make my work more efficient. Overall impressed with the product. Screen looks good, is responsive, and colors/sharpness are good.

—— J Rau

Awesome little monitor for my projects.

—— Daniel Champagne

I got the samples within a week. Very fast delivery. This is a very nice display. Very sharp with good contrast. The viewing angles are a little better than some of the other displays I have used.

—— GeorgeB

Displays came well packaged with foam to protect the header pins against being bent in shipment. Came right up at the default 0x3C I2C address used by MicroPython's SSD1306 driver. Pre-soldered header is a time saver. Enough room for four lines by sixteen characters of tiny text. These are my new favorite displays. (0.91 OLED)

—— Detta

Easy enough to get set up, and good colors. Pure black is perfect, as expected from an OLED. Only issue I have is per-pixel writing - it takes about 1.5 seconds for a full refresh with my setup.

—— Ryan James

Great screens - were packed well and worked great!

—— Fletcher

This is not the first time we have ordered. At first, we ordered a trial batch of 10 pcs, then two times of 1000 pcs, and now 3000 pcs.

Does Your 1.05-Inch TFT LCD Design Survive the SPI Bandwidth and Backlight Constraints of a Wearable HMI?
Latest company news about Does Your 1.05-Inch TFT LCD Design Survive the SPI Bandwidth and Backlight Constraints of a Wearable HMI?

A 1.05-inch TFT LCD often enters a design because the enclosure is already small: a wearable monitor, a handheld diagnostic tool, a compact instrument, or a battery-powered tag. The 120 × 240 resolution sounds modest, the 4-wire SPI interface sounds simple, and the 400 cd/m² backlight sounds adequate. Then the first prototype runs at 15 frames per second, the backlight driver overheats in a sealed plastic case, or the display resets when the user touches the enclosure. None of these failures are exotic. They come from treating a 1.05-inch TFT LCD like a scaled-down version of a larger panel. The full pin definitions, timing diagrams, and interface mode table are in the SFTO105JY-7403AN Datasheet.pdf.

The SFTO105JY-7403AN from Saef Technology Limited is a useful reference for that discussion. It is a 1.05-inch IPS panel with 120 × 240 resolution, a 4-wire SPI interface, a single white-LED backlight, and a module thickness of 1.56 mm. The datasheet’s overview lists an ST7789 controller, while the specification table lists GC9A01—confirm the exact controller variant with the supplier before finalizing the initialization code. That detail matters because the initialization sequence, the sleep-mode command set, and the SPI timing can differ between controller families. This article is organized around five design assumptions that fail at 1.05 inches, and the practical fix for each one.

Assumption 1: “SPI is fast enough for this small display”

The 1.05-inch TFT LCD has 120 × 240 pixels. At 16-bit color, one frame is 120 × 240 × 2 bytes = 57,600 bytes, or 460,800 bits. The datasheet’s SPI write cycle time is 10 ns minimum, which suggests a theoretical clock rate far above what most MCUs can sustain. In practice, a 10 MHz SPI clock transfers about 1 byte per microsecond, so a full frame takes roughly 57.6 ms—about 17 frames per second, before command overhead. At 20 MHz, the frame time drops to about 29 ms, or 34 fps.

For a 1.05-inch TFT LCD used as a status display or a slow-updating instrument, 17–34 fps is adequate. For a wearable UI with scrolling text or animated icons, it is not. The fix is not to demand a faster SPI clock from the MCU; it is to design the UI around partial updates. Send only the changed region, use the controller’s address-window commands, and avoid full-screen redraws. A 1.05-inch TFT LCD with a well-designed partial-update strategy can feel responsive at 10 MHz SPI. A full-frame animation will not.

The datasheet’s timing table gives the write cycle, the SCL high and low pulse widths, and the data setup/hold times. Those numbers are the contract with the controller. If the host’s SPI peripheral cannot meet them at the chosen clock, the display may show occasional pixel corruption that looks like a firmware bug. Check the timing with an oscilloscope before blaming the display. The full pin definitions and SPI timing are in the SFTO105JY-7403AN 1.05-inch TFT LCD datasheet. Place this link in the interface-bandwidth section of the product page, with the anchor text above.

Assumption 2: “The backlight is only 60 mW, so thermal design does not matter”

The datasheet lists a forward voltage of 3.0 V typical at 20 mA, with a power dissipation of 60 mW. That is small in absolute terms, but the 1.05-inch TFT LCD is often mounted in a sealed plastic enclosure with no airflow, and the backlight is a single LED at the edge of a very thin light guide. The heat has nowhere to go except into the polarizer and the surrounding plastic.

A 60 mW heat source will not melt anything, but it can raise the local temperature enough to shift the liquid crystal response time or accelerate the polarizer’s aging. The datasheet’s operating temperature range is −20°C to +70°C, and the storage range is −30°C to +80°C. Those are the qualified limits, not a guarantee that the display will look the same at 70°C as it does at 25°C. The datasheet’s note is explicit: response time slows near −10°C, and the background darkens at high temperature.

The practical fix is to use a constant-current backlight driver, not a series resistor, and to dim the backlight when the product is not in direct sunlight. The datasheet recommends independent constant-current drive. On a 1.05-inch TFT LCD, a small boost or charge-pump driver with PWM dimming is usually sufficient. The driver should be rated for the LED’s forward-voltage variation and should not be placed directly under the display’s active area. If the enclosure is sealed, add a thermal path from the LED edge to the housing, or reduce the maximum brightness in firmware.

Assumption 3: “The FPC and the 1.56 mm module are robust enough for handheld use”

The 1.05-inch TFT LCD is 14.25 × 28.60 mm with a 1.56 mm thickness. The FPC is the mechanical weak point. The datasheet’s handling precautions warn against applying excessive force to the display surface, bending the FPC sharply, and touching the exposed driver IC. In a wearable or handheld product, the display is often pressed by the user’s finger or squeezed by the enclosure. Those forces travel through the glass and the FPC.

A common failure mode is a cracked FPC trace or a delaminated bond after a drop. The 1.05-inch TFT LCD should be mounted with a gasket that contacts the bezel or the FPC stiffener, not the active area. The FPC bend radius should be respected, and the connector should be secured with adhesive or a mechanical stop. If the product needs touch, a custom capacitive touch panel can be OCA-bonded to the display, but the added stack changes the mechanical tolerance. Saef Technology Limited can provide standard and custom touch solutions for this 1.05-inch TFT LCD, including cover glass thickness and controller selection. Define the touch stack before the bezel drawing is released.

Assumption 4: “The display is small, so ESD is not a problem”

A 1.05-inch TFT LCD has a small front surface, but the FPC and the exposed driver are still ESD-sensitive. The datasheet’s reliability table includes air discharge at ±8 kV and contact discharge at ±4 kV, but those tests are performed on the module, not on the assembled product. In a plastic enclosure, a user’s finger can discharge into the display surface or the FPC connector.

The fix is to add ESD protection at the FPC connector and to ensure the enclosure does not create a discharge path to the panel. Ground the bezel if it is conductive, or use a grounded conductive gasket. Keep the SPI traces short and referenced to a solid ground plane. The datasheet’s handling precautions call for grounded tools and grounded operators during assembly; those precautions matter even more on a 1.05-inch TFT LCD because the small size encourages hand assembly without a fixture.

Assumption 5: “Initialization is a one-time task”

The 1.05-inch TFT LCD controller requires a specific initialization sequence: reset, sleep-out, display-on, and the gamma and power settings. The datasheet’s pin definition includes a RESX pin, and the SPI timing table gives the setup and hold times. If the initialization sequence is wrong, the display may show a white screen, a shifted image, or no image at all.

A less obvious issue is noise-induced state corruption. The datasheet’s precautions recommend periodic refresh of the operation status and re-transmission of display data to cope with catastrophic noise. On a 1.05-inch TFT LCD used in an industrial environment, the SPI bus can pick up noise from motors or switching regulators. Implement a watchdog that re-initializes the display if the image is corrupted, and keep the SPI traces away from the backlight driver.

A verification checklist for the 1.05-inch TFT LCD

Before the design review, confirm the following:

  • SPI clock and timing meet the datasheet’s write cycle and setup/hold values.

  • UI uses partial updates; full-frame animation is not required at the chosen SPI clock.

  • Backlight driver is constant-current and rated for the LED’s forward-voltage variation.

  • Thermal path from the LED edge to the enclosure is defined; brightness derating is implemented.

  • FPC bend radius and strain relief are respected; bezel does not press on the active area.

  • ESD protection is placed at the FPC connector and the front surface.

  • Initialization sequence matches the exact controller variant (ST7789 or GC9A01—confirm with supplier).

  • Firmware includes a display watchdog and a sleep-mode timeout.

A 1.05-inch TFT LCD is a capable display for wearable and handheld HMI, but it is not a plug-and-play component. The engineering effort belongs in the SPI bandwidth budget, the backlight thermal path, the FPC mechanical design, the ESD protection, and the initialization sequence. The SFTO105JY-7403AN provides the panel and the interface; the reliability comes from the system design.

For a design review, contact the engineering team at Saef Technology Limited with the SPI clock plan, the enclosure thermal data, and the touch requirement. The team can confirm the controller variant and discuss the custom touch stack before the bezel is frozen.
