Customer Reviews
Very fast response to email and after payment validated item got shipped with express air freight and received within few days. Items were brand new in condition and even had pin header soldered which is a big plus. Very happy overall and will buy again!

—— Andreas Anderssons

The display is bright! Worked as expected using the libraries from Adafruit mention in other reviews. Also must use the SPI_MODE3 setting in the Init. I used the Arduino Nano, VCC to 5V and BKL to 3.3V. (PN: SFTM130JY-7181AN)

—— Richard Ingram

As always 100 % best service....

—— Evto-WEb Aps. Denmark

I have this set up as a monitor for a security system. It works great after I did some troubleshooting.

—— Michael Helms

It is a straight up HDMI monitor with Micro-USB for power and touch controls. It's one fancy trick is that it is a 5 point (capacitive) touch monitor so it works just like a phone or a laptop screen with taps, drags, pinches and other touch gestures. When in extended mode both switched to their native resolutions and the display was nice and sharp.

—— Darkwynd

Hello Janco, Hope you are well. We were very happy with the quality of the previous batch of 2.42 inch OLED displays that we brought from you (see below). We would like to place another order for XXXX pcs.

—— Libby

Excellent work! Thank you I will keep your company in contact for next orders。

Overall a great monitor. I’m a road warrior and was looking a portable monitor that I could take with me to make my work more efficient. Overall impressed with the product. Screen looks good, is responsive, and colors/sharpness are good.

—— J Rau

Awesome little monitor for my projects.

—— Daniel Champagne

I got the samples within a week. Very fast delivery. This is a very nice display. Very sharp with good contrast. The viewing angles are a little better than some of the other displays I have used.

—— GeorgeB

Displays came well packaged with foam to protect the header pins against being bent in shipment. Came right up at the default 0x3C I2C address used by MicroPython's SSD1306 driver. Pre-soldered header is a time saver. Enough room for four lines by sixteen characters of tiny text. These are my new favorite displays. (0.91 OLED)

—— Detta

Easy enough to get set up, and good colors. Pure black is perfect, as expected from an OLED. Only issue I have is per-pixel writing - it takes about 1.5 seconds for a full refresh with my setup.

—— Ryan James

Great screens - were packed well and worked great!

—— Fletcher

This is not the first time we have ordered. At first, we ordered a trial batch of 10 pcs, then two times of 1000 pcs, and now 3000 pcs.

—— Josh

I am working on the Reflections open-source mobile entertainment system and needed a bright display for a wrist-watch application. SAEF gave me great communication, answered my questions quickly, and sent me the parts quickly. -Frank

Does the 4-Pin IIC Interface on Your 0.91-Inch OLED Hide Five Integration Problems?

The 4-pin IIC interface on a 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display looks like the simplest display connection available. Power, ground, clock, and data. Four traces, a pull-up resistor, and you are done. That simplicity is real, but it also hides five integration problems that do not appear on the 30-pin SSD1306 modules engineers usually compare it to. The 4-pin connector on the SFOM091JY4-12832WB-01 from Saef Technology Limited exposes only GND, VCC, SCK, and SDA. There is no reset pin, no chip-select pin, no data/command pin, and no separate panel voltage pin on that connector. Every function that those pins normally provide must be solved somewhere else, either on the module itself or in the host design.

This article is organized around those five hidden problems, using the datasheet's mechanical drawing, pin assignment, DC characteristics, and application example. The goal is not to scare anyone away from the 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display—it is a capable and compact module—but to show where the integration work actually lives when the connector is this minimal.

Problem 1: There is no reset pin, so the power ramp becomes the reset

The 4-pin connector does not expose the RES# pin of the SSD1306. The datasheet's block diagram still shows RES# internally, and the application example still starts with a reset pulse, but on this module the reset must be generated by the host or replaced by a software reset command after power-up.

That has a direct consequence for the 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display. The VCC ramp becomes part of the initialization. If the supply rises too slowly, or if it bounces during power-up, the SSD1306 may not enter its default state, and the first IIC transaction may be ignored. The datasheet's power-up sequence calls for VDD first, then VCC, then a 100 ms delay before the display-on command. On a module without a reset pin, that sequence is not a suggestion; it is the only thing standing between a clean start and a blank screen.

The practical fix is to control the VCC rail with a load switch or a regulator enable pin, and to issue the software reset command (0xE2) before the initialization sequence. Do not rely on the host's GPIO reset line, because it is not connected to the module. On a 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display, a slow-ramp supply from a coin cell with no load switch is one of the most common causes of "it worked on the bench but not in the product."

Problem 2: The IIC address and the bus voltage are not the same question

The datasheet's IIC timing table gives the clock cycle, the start/stop conditions, and the data setup/hold times. The pin assignment shows the DC pin acting as SA0 in IIC mode, but on the 4-pin connector there is no DC pin. The address is fixed by the module's internal strap, typically 0x78 or 0x7A in 8-bit form. The host firmware must use the correct address; there is no hardware option to change it.

The second half of the problem is the bus voltage. The module's VCC pin accepts 3.3–5 V, and the SSD1306 logic supply can be 1.65–3.3 V. If the host runs at 1.8 V I/O and the module is powered from 5 V, the IIC lines may not meet the VIH and VIL thresholds of the module's internal level shifting. The datasheet's DC characteristics give the input thresholds as 0.8 × VDD and 0.2 × VDD, and those numbers must be checked against the host's actual output levels.

On a 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display, the safest approach is to power the module from the same rail as the host's IIC bus, or to use a level shifter if the host is lower voltage. Add 4.7 kΩ pull-ups to the bus voltage, not to the module's VCC, and verify the pull-up value against the bus capacitance. The 4-pin interface is simple, but it is not voltage-agnostic.

Problem 3: The 128x32 RAM layout is not a half-size 128x64

The SFOM091JY4-12832WB-01 has 128 × 32 pixels, which means four pages of 8-pixel rows in the SSD1306's GDDRAM. A 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display with 128 × 32 resolution does not use pages 4–7 of the 128 × 64 layout. The initialization code in the datasheet sets the multiplex ratio to 0x3F for a 64-row panel; for this module, the multiplex ratio must be set to 0x1F for 32 rows, and the COM pin configuration may also differ.

A common firmware mistake is to reuse the 128 × 64 initialization sequence and then wonder why the bottom half of the frame buffer writes nothing. On a 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display, the page addressing mode is the natural fit: four pages, each 8 pixels tall. The horizontal addressing mode can also work, but the column and page address ranges must be set to match the 128 × 32 active area.

The UI layout changes as well. A 128 × 32 display has room for four lines of 8-pixel text, not eight. Icons and status bars need to be designed for the narrower height. The datasheet's mechanical drawing shows a viewing area of 24.384 × 7.584 mm, which is a long, narrow strip. Design the UI for that aspect ratio rather than scaling down a 128 × 64 layout.

Problem 4: The narrow PCB leaves little room for decoupling and routing

The module's PCB is 38.00 × 12.00 mm, and the active area is 22.384 × 5.584 mm. The 4-pin connector is at one end, and the driver IC and the OLED panel occupy most of the board. That leaves very little space for decoupling capacitors, pull-up resistors, and ESD protection.

On a 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display, the decoupling capacitor for VCC should be placed as close as possible to the connector, and the pull-up resistors should be on the host board rather than on the module. If the product needs ESD protection on the IIC lines, use small packages such as 0201 or 0402, and place them near the connector. The datasheet's handling precautions warn against bending the flex and applying pressure to the driver IC; those warnings matter even more on a narrow board where the components are close together.

The mechanical mounting should also respect the board's dimensions. The datasheet's drawing shows four mounting holes, and the module is 3.10 mm thick at maximum. Use all four holes and avoid applying torque to the PCB, because the glass panel is bonded to the board and a twisted board can crack the panel.

Problem 5: The brightness and lifetime trade-off is set in firmware

The datasheet gives a lifetime of 10,000 hours at 120 cd/m², 30,000 hours at 80 cd/m², and 50,000 hours at 60 cd/m². The typical brightness with the internal DC/DC is 150–180 cd/m². A 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display running at maximum contrast in a sealed enclosure will reach the end of its lifetime much sooner than the 50,000-hour figure.

The contrast command (0x81) is the firmware's main lever. Set the contrast for the intended viewing distance and ambient light, not for the bench demo. If the product is battery-powered, a lower contrast setting also reduces the OLED current and extends runtime. The datasheet's design precautions warn against a white background with black characters; a dark background with light text uses fewer lit pixels and reduces both current and image-sticking risk.

On a 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display, the small screen size makes it tempting to run at maximum brightness to compensate for the narrow viewing area. That is the wrong trade-off for a product that needs to last. Calibrate the contrast with the final enclosure and the intended UI, and add a screensaver or display-off timeout in firmware.

A verification checklist for the 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display

Before the pilot run, confirm the following:

  • VCC rail is controlled by a load switch or regulator enable, and the power-up sequence includes a 100 ms delay before display-on.

  • Software reset command (0xE2) is issued before initialization, since there is no hardware reset pin.

  • IIC address matches the module's fixed strap, and the bus voltage matches the host's I/O levels.

  • Pull-up resistors are on the host side, sized for the bus capacitance and the bus voltage.

  • Multiplex ratio is set to 0x1F for 32 rows, and the page addressing range covers four pages.

  • Decoupling capacitor is close to the 4-pin connector; ESD protection is on the host side if needed.

  • Contrast setting is calibrated for the enclosure, with a screensaver and display-off timeout.

  • Mounting uses all four holes, and the PCB is not twisted during assembly.

A 0.91-inch 4-pin IIC OLED display is a compact, low-power module that fits narrow enclosures and simple UI designs. The SFOM091JY4-12832WB-01 provides the panel, the SSD1306 controller, and the 4-pin interface; the integration work belongs in the startup sequence, the IIC bus design, the 128 × 32 RAM layout, the narrow-board layout, and the brightness policy.

For a design review, contact the engineering team at Saef Technology Limited with the schematic, the power rail plan, and the intended UI. The team can confirm the module configuration and discuss the touch or front-panel options if the enclosure allows. The full pin definitions, IIC timing, and initialization example are in the SFOM091JY4-12832WB-01 Datasheet.pdf.
